Think of me as the Statler and Waldorf of Cyberspace.
The other day, Sarah Tuttle-Singer wrote a wonderful post entitled We Need to Quit Telling Lies on Facebook. Read it and if this isn’t your experience as a parent, know I like you a little less right now.
Tuttle-Singer – and a lot of people have discussed how we are editing our lives to make ourselves seem better. Well, no kidding. And how that creates a spirit of competition – a vicious cycle of manic happiness hellbent on proving we have the greatest life of all. I may be paraphrasing here, but just a bit.
It got me thinking about the photos I do stick up on FB and I realized that while I may put up some happy photos, mostly, I don’t put up photos at all. Because I spend way too much time calling bullshit on other people’s photos. Yes, my heightened inner cynic has actually allowed me to avoid that competitive cycle altogether. Listen, I write happy endings and you’re still not sucking me in. Nope, I am your “friend” making the snarky comments on your photo.
Given how many bad habits/addictions I do have (mostly fictional ones), may I say what a relief it is to not be driven by this dark desire. So I say to you all, “Break free!” Stop editing your own photos and simply find smug satisfaction in the fact that you are NOT that needy person having to shove the fabulous arts and crafts session turning popsicle sticks into a Habitat for Humanity home down other people’s throats.
That you are the person who cries “BS!” You and your kids may have built that skinny recycled architectural wonder but I know it ended in tears, credit card debt to bring in a contractor and a weekend of disgusted silence from your partner. That Instagram filter can’t fool me.
There you go. Post all the happy snaps you want. I will see through their fantasy of lies to the cold stark truth below. I will not be sucked in with some desperate need to show you all how great everything is going. I am my own woman and provide my own validation.
But just in case …
