Welcome to Book Blog Love November! All this month, I’m featuring book blogs that I love and the fabulous female(s) behind them. (Curl Up with a Good Book Sunday and my regular posts resume in December.) Each day in November, I’ll spotlight a different blog whose content ranges from reviews to author interviews and events to book tours. All the bloggers graciously agreed to answer 7 questions about themselves. YA features predominantly in some, and in others is merely part of what they cover. So stick around and get to know these great chicks and the blogs they pour their hearts into. I bet you’ll see some old favs and make some new ones.
Presenting: Erleen and Books For YA
1) Describe your blog and tell us why you chose that name for it?
Books For YA is a book review blog I created on the spur of the moment, on June, 2012. The first few names I came up with were okay (i.e. Bookworm Diaries and Booklandia) but I didn’t sound right to me so I find inspiration in the internet. Then I came across Emily’s Falling for YA book blog and I love how her title can be interpreted into two ways (Falling for YA(you) and Falling for Young Adults). So from there, I changed the first word and that’s how Books For YA originated.
2) What are 3 things about you that would surprise people?
- I was a band member in high school of both an all-girl rock band and a marching band.
- And in connection to number 1, everyone thought I played the guitar but I was actually the drummer.
- And lastly, I’m actually sporty despite my slender/thin physique. I can play table tennis, badminton and basketball (in varying expertise).
3) Why do you love YA? And conversely is there anything that drives you nuts about it?
What I love about YA is that it transports me back to my teenage years. I just turned 22 and still new to the responsibility of adulthood. I’m longing for the years when the only problem that I have was how I can hide the big zit in my forehead. YA fiction makes me forget about reality and allowed me to inhabit a teenage body without paying a lot of money for Integrators (read Lock In by John Scalzi). It also lets me save the world from rampaging gods (yes, I’m talking about you, Zeus and Hades) which is awesome.
What I don’t like about it is that, it’s now plague with a lot of dystopian novels that have almost the same storyline: a totalitarian/dictatorial government, a girl or boy who was wronged by the government, and an uprising to destroy the ruler. I like the few dystopians that I read but the more I read books from this genre, the more it became predictable to me. It drives me nuts that when I read a summary of a book, I can easily predict what will happen in the story and then after I read the book, I’ll have an I-knew-it moment. Those moments are not fun for me.
4) What book would you fight a zombie horde to save?
Oh this is a really tough one. I’d probably save the Harry Potter series. What? I’m a bookworm. Saving one book is not enough for me. At least, let me save a series. And besides, I’d do anything to save a Harry Potter box set from the rotten hands of zombies, no matter how heavy that box set is.
5) If you had a theme song, what would it be and why?
It’s sad that there still isn’t a song written/dedicated for bookworms (or is there?). But anyway, my theme song depends on my mood. And right now, I’m currently in the second day of NaNoWriMo and probably, still has a lot of enthusiasm while writing since it’s still the first week. I think my perfect theme song for today is “Silent” by Tori Kelly from the sountrack of the movie, The Giver. It’s a really good song and the chorus and the second verse captured whatever I’m feeling right now as I embark on this NaNo challenge.
“I’m ready now, it’s time
And leave my fear behind
My dreams are loud and my heart’s wide awake
And all I know is I’m not meant to be silent”
6) What fictional character would you want to date and who would you want for a best friend?
There are a lot of fictional guys I would like to date like Entienne St. Clair, Graham Larkin, Jeb Holt, Augustus Waters (may he rest in peace), Four, Adrian Ivashkov, Kyrillos and a whole lot more. It’s hard to pick one because they’re all swoon-worthy. But if I really really really have to choose one, I’d choose the best and that’ll be Noah Shaw from Mara Dyer series. He just makes me swoon so hard with his panty-dropping smile. He’s the Prince of Swoon in my Imaginary Book of Swoon-worthy Fictional Boyfriends so that says a lot (no, it doesn’t). Close second would probably be, Dean Holder from Hopeless series because what can I say, he gives the best first kiss in the history first kisses. LOL!
Best friend? Hmm, I’d love to be Hermione’s girl best friend. I think she and I have a lot in common, mainly our insatiable appetite for knowledge. We will probably be rivals when it comes to being the best student but I’ll teach her that being second best is not as bad as she thinks. LOL! And also, if I’m best friend with Hermione, I can hang out with Ron and Harry so that’s also a huge plus.
7) What has been the biggest surprise/delight of your blogging career?
The biggest surprise for me in my book blogging career was probably the camaraderie amongst the bloggers and authors. I was very shy when I started blogging back in 2012 and at that time, I was only focused on my book reviews because I didn’t know how to approach anyone. It was just last year that I gathered enough self-confidence to ask some of my favorite authors for my first blog event. I was so shocked at how friendly and approachable they were. I admire them even more. It’s such a huge community of friendly people that is united by their love for books. I’m really happy that I became a part of this community.
